Missouri Loses Thousands of Jobs in July
Federal unemployment figures released today show that Missouri led the nation last month in terms of job losses, shedding more than 51,000 jobs. Missouri's unemployment rate rose slightly in July to 5.5%, but that's still below where it was a year ago when the rate was 5.8%. The numbers prompted a sharp attack by Senator John Kerry's campaign, which said the job losses showed President Bush's tax cuts have not created more jobs for Missourians or persuaded companies to stop shipping jobs overseas. But state economic development officials say the dip is temporary and blamed it on schools closing for the summer and automakers laying off employees as they change their product lines.
