In just three and a half years, Ashcroft has made a series of astonishing changes in law enforcement that make a mockery of the president's words. Confirmed by the slimmest margin for an attorney general in 75 years, he has used the events of September 11 to expand his powers and push for aggressive change. His many critics, including spokespeople from both the left and right, accuse him of committing a massive assault on our rights, liberties, and protections. Former House Republican Majority Leader Dick Armey has said that Mr. Ashcroft is "out of control." On issue after issue, Ashcroft and his Justice Department have moved with alarming speed to claim broad powers to deny citizens and non-citizens alike access to basic due process, encroach on civil liberties, compromise safety, and threaten the independence of the federal judiciary.
